Music: 3½/5 – Very impressive, Konami’s composers really worked hard to make the MegaDrive sound chip sound melodic and spooky and were very succesful, the production quality is really nice. However, Gear Steamer was just too cute and I have to give him ½ a point alone. However, a lot of the bosses are just gigantic lumps with little to no animation (Frankenstein, the Statue, the Golem etc.). Enemies generally just have a lot of animation, even the standard ones. I could knock off half a point for the lame and goofy looking bosses, but I’m just genuinely so impressed with the graphics I really don’t want to do that.Īnimation: 4½/5 – Animation wise I also find the game more pleasing than Super CV4. There’s just immense care in detail with the graphic design. Though there are only six levels, there’s great graphic variety and I love all the different graphic effects, from the reflections on the water, to leaning tower, the giant stage elements and the screwy illusion section in the final level. Graphics: 5/5 – I’m almost a little stunned to say this, but the game not only beats Super CV4 in presentation, it does so for Rondo of Blood too. You also get a second playable character, but frankly I enjoyed Morris’s whipping action way more. You can also swing with your whip but this was more annoying than fun. I also quite like that you can’t whip in eight directions which made the use of special items more vital, albeit you can still whip upward diagonally and straight down. While this messed me up initially, I later got the hang of it. What took the longest to get used to, ironically the same as Super CV4, was that the item button was separate from the attack button. I think this also gives the gameplay a bit of fluidity. Gameplay: 3½/5 – Very fluid and I actually like that your whip also destroys enemies and items behind you.
